The Crown 28 was built by Calgan Marine in North Vancouver, Canada from 1972 to about 1978(?), producing about 100 in all. The name "Crown" came from the street in North Van that Calgan Marine was on.
Calgan Marine began by making Cal boats, specifically the Cal 20, Cal 25 and Cal 29. Then the decided to "fill the holes" and created the Crown 18, Crown 23 and Crown 28, basically using the popular and very successful Cal hull. In fact, rumour has it that Bill Lapworth was not happy with the original design of the Crown 28, saying it was too much like the Cal 29. So Calgan made just enough changes to make Mr. Lapworth happy, and the Crown 28 was born.
Like the Cal, the Crown 28 was sturdy, very happy in heavy weather, but performed well in light air as well. Interior appointments were slightly more "deluxe" than the Cal, and much more well-built than many other similar boats of the era such as the Catalina 27. This was borne out by the fact that many Crown 28s are still kept in excellent condition, often by members of prestigous yacht clubs.
So if you own a Crown 28, please feel free to join the Crown 28 Forum and say hi. If there is interest in this site, I will be making a Membership database, with boat name, pics, homeport, etc.
